I personally spot and validate AI-generated posts, and block the OP. Then, I run a simple Python script to block any reposters.
Generative AI is a scourge upon free creative thought, and it is the product of a mass theft the likes of which the world has no comparison. It is atrophying the minds of otherwise highly intelligent people, reducing them to walking living breathing proxies of some language model, unable to form a thought for longer than a few seconds before they are forced to depend on a monthly subscription to have some next-token-generator spit out a vaguely-coherent wall of text for them to use instead. It saps away at the curiosity present in bright and capable minds, and I am insulted by anybody's attempt to use some godawful low-entropy next-plausible-word machine as a way to churn out the mental equivilent of egg-flavored gelatinated calorie paste. The summation of all human creative work has been filed out from every crack and crevice of the Internet, illicitly stolen, and homogenized into a machine that hampers original thought. It is runing the Internet, it is harming those exposed to it, and it must be eviscerated.
Gone are the days of counting fingers or looking closely at faces. Generative AI models have improved far beyond Will Smith eating spaghetti, but that doesn't mean that AI is impossible to spot. You can absolutely still distinguish AI from reality, it just takes developing a sense and a feeling more than any simple checklist. Some of the areas I like to pay extra attention to are the noise level, the lighting, the depth of focus, and the styles of lettering in an image. I also recommend getting practice with tools like SightEngine's AI or Not Test. Remember that you and you alone are responsible for the content of your account, regardless of your actual intentions. You must be proactive and take responsiblity to ensure that you aren't posting or spreading AI slop.
The blocklist is built on one single premise - "Posted, Re-Posted, or Linked to AI Slop". If I see AI slop in my feed, I'll block the post and those who spread it. Turns out, plenty of people who oppose AI... post it unintentionally. Just because something was an accident does not mean that it did not happen, and if I see AI, I block it.
I am against Generative AI. Neither SightEngine nor GPTZero are generative - they are classification models. I am not against machine learning being used for classification.
Every post I locate and block was found by me, by hand, with my own two eyes. I don't need any detection tool to see if something is AI or not. Regardless, I put any suspected post into a relevant AI detection service simply as a second opinion. I do not believe that these services are some perfectly accurate omnipotent force. I do not rely on them to find AI posts, and neither should you. Still, it would be irresponsible to add people to a blocklist without giving these detection programs a chance to evaluate, even if only as a sanity check.
It depends. If the AI post I spot is the only AI post you've made, and it was an accident, and the post wasn't egregiously obvious as an AI post, you're much more likely to be removed from the list. DM me or email me to discuss.
Because I am left-leaning/pro-consumer/English-speaking/etc, and therefore see a lot of those posts on my feed, some of which are AI-generated. Also, it's not like Bluesky is some right-wing/anti-consumer bastion either lol.
Unfortunately yes, but there's not really anywhere else to go. Mastodon doesn't have global visibility of all posts, Twitter is for Nazis, Threads is owned by Mark Facebook, and Reddit smote Apollo. If you have any good alternatives, please do let me know.
